Assessment 4: Summary of Role Play

The scenario that was chosen for our group was scenario 4. This role play involved a Podiatrist, Diversionary Therapist, Health Promotion Officer, Physiologist and Occupational Therapist. The podiatrist was played by Jayden, the diversional therapist by Ranae, the occupational therapist by Natalie and the physiologist by Lachlan.

Gluyas (2015) describes how communications between team members ‘requires co-operation, co-ordination and communication between members of a team to achieve desired outcomes. Communication between the five of us was fluid, as we all knew what we needed to do. The communication process was quickly established, and in what order we had to perform our parts. All members of the role play group were extremely cooperative as we all wanted to do the best of our ability. Communicating with the others was easy due to the great atmosphere. The most effective communication strategy was the face to face conversations that we had. During the face to face conversations we would take 10 -15 minutes to further research our ideas and to polish our answers. This allowed us to freely engage with each other allowing us to brain storm ideas. Ultimately face to face conversations allowed to effective and concisely communicate our ideas. These face to face conversations allowed us to compile our ideas into a role play, where we could build upon each others responses.

During this phase we planned out that the podiatrist should work with the physiologist as it allowed us to have a more complete care of the patient. The physiologist would work on the patients movement, while the podiatrist would help provide the proper footwear for the patient to use. We also made sure to build upon each others answers where the health promotion officer and diversional therapist would work with the occupational therapist to provide a holistic care for the patient. As we were researching for ideas, we made the choice that the diversional therapist and health promotion officer would work together to help Steven ‘s (the patient) mental health, so we came up with programs such as yoga day or fitness day. This allowed us to solve manage Steven’s mental health as he felt depressed not being able to participate in community events. Lachlan, Jayden and Natalie would focus on his physical health as they were respectively the podiatrist, physiologist and occupational therapist. As Burnad. (1992). mentioned communication between colleagues must be effective and informative as the patient could seek further treatment from a specialist.
